The Pitch Lake

Hi Guys,

The world’s largest deposit of asphalt is in La Brea, Trinidad.  Estimated to contain 10 million tons, covering roughly 100 acers and some 250 feet deep. Sir Walter Raleigh of England rediscovered it back in 1595 after the local tribes showed it to him.  He found it to be a good material to repair his boats, and then in 1887, an American businessman  Amzi Barber secured a 40 year lease to which he exported the asphalt to US cities which roads were made. Imagine roads in New York, Washington D.C and other US cities and even in from of Buckingham Palace had roads which came from Trinidad.

The pitch feels almost alive as it burps and hisses while you walk along, during the rainy season pools are form where visitors can have a bath.  Though its  highly sulfur contains has a smell which takes getting use to but it is said to cure skin disease, joint pains and will make one 10 years younger.  There is lots of flora and fauna such as wild roses, nymph lilies, birds of paradise, Herron, hummingbird, kingfishers and sandpipers to name a few.

So if you are in Trinidad and feeling for a bit of history and nature of a different kind, I can assure you that the Pitch Lake is not an experience one would come across every day.  So be sure to stop by and spend the day or on your way to one of the many southern beaches, you will be sure to enjoy it.
